Overview

Marcia June Oda, a long time Special Education teacher, artist, and most of all, a mom, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, which were her favorite roles. She moved from Aberdeen, WA in 1956 to complete her senior yr of high school at West High in Denver, CO, class of '57. With five year old, Sabrina, and four year old, Randy, in toe, she, as a single mother, ventured to CO State College in Greeley to earn a BA degree in Special Education (1968). Later, she earned a MA degree in Curriculum and Instruction (1974). In 1984, she completed a AOS degree in Graphic Arts at RMSAD, Denver , CO, By her own admission, she was a terrible graphic artist and was just a second rate Sunday painter. Through the years she roamed the US from WA to FL finally settling in Denver, CO. She was married twice: once to Paul Minter, (failed marriage but two wonderful children and marvelously sister-in-law's), and a second marriage to Mike Oda that also ended in divorce. She did not recommend marriage. She maintained contact with school friends from Aberdeen, WA. Her last year of high school in Denver was grim. There was no 'meet and greet' back in the dark ages. She taught in three states, CO, FL, and NE. Her favorite years were her first five years at Rose Hill Elementary, Commerce City, and one year on temporary assignment at Arapahoe High Schhol, Littleton, CO, and and her last 17 years at Mountain View Youth Correction Center in Jefferson County. She worked with kids ages 5-18 through the years. Lock-up was fun: kids came to class sober, no drugs, 'home' all night in their cells, hot breakfast in the morning, in class every day. She said her major goal each day was to be kind. She enjoyed sharing funny classroom stories with incarcerated kids. One being when she was covering a classroom when the regular teacher was called to a meeting. She was talking with one student in which she had previously established friendly rapporing while ignoring some very obnoxious, rude comments directed her from a new student seated a few feet away. After a few minutes, the student she had been talking to, turned towards the kid and said, \
