Frequently asked questions

What is Juvederm?

Juvederm is a family of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers made by Allergan, used to add volume to lips, cheeks, chin, jawline, and folds. Its gels are smooth and cohesive, results are immediate, and it lasts roughly 6 months to 2 years depending on the product. It's reversible with hyaluronidase.

Juvederm is not one product but a range, and the differences matter. Ultra and Volbella are softer, for lips and fine lines; Vollure and Voluma are firmer and more lifting, for folds and cheeks; Volux is the stiffest, for jawline definition. Most use Allergan's Vycross cross-linking, which is smooth and long-lasting but also hydrophilic, so it draws water and can look puffy if overfilled or placed too superficially in thin-skinned areas like under the eye. Common side effects are swelling, bruising, tenderness, and lumps that settle over about two weeks. Serious risks are rare but real, including vascular occlusion. Because Juvederm is hyaluronic acid, an unsatisfactory or misplaced result can be dissolved, which is a genuine safety advantage over permanent fillers.

What does a full Juvederm filler treatment cost by area?

A typical US Juvederm treatment costs $650 to $1,200 per syringe. Lips usually take one syringe ($650 to $900), cheeks two or more ($1,400 to $2,400), and jawline two to four syringes ($1,600 to $4,000). Totals depend on how much volume you need, not the area itself.

Because filler is sold by the syringe, cost scales with volume. People wanting a subtle change often spend less than they expect; people restoring significant volume loss spend more, and staging treatment over two or three sessions is normal and often produces a better result than filling everything at once. Ask whether the quoted price includes follow-up, and whether the clinic charges to dissolve its own work if you're unhappy. Some clinics build the cost of a correction in; others charge $150 to $500 for hyaluronidase. Loyalty programs like Allē can offset repeat costs. Prices vary widely by city and injector credentials. Cheap filler is a genuine red flag: product sourced outside legitimate US channels is a known problem, and complications cost far more than the discount saved.

What should I expect from before and after Juvederm?

Juvederm gives immediate visible volume, but the honest "after" is at two weeks. Days 1 to 3 usually look swollen and sometimes lumpy or uneven; swelling settles over 1 to 2 weeks as the gel integrates. Bruising is common, especially in the lips and under-eyes.

That early swelling is why so many people panic on day two. Juvederm's gels attract water, so the first 48 hours often look bigger and firmer than the final result. Judge nothing until 14 days. Realistic outcomes are restored contour and softened folds, not a different face; deep nasolabial folds soften rather than disappear, and skin quality, laxity, and texture are not addressed by filler. When comparing clinic galleries, look for consistent lighting and neutral expressions, and for photos taken at least two weeks post-treatment. If you develop severe pain, skin that turns white or mottled, or vision changes, that is not normal swelling: contact your injector immediately, as it can signal vascular occlusion.

Juvederm vs Restylane: what's the difference?

Both are hyaluronic acid fillers and both are reversible. Juvederm (Allergan) uses smoother, more cohesive gels that spread evenly and hold more water, so it looks plumper. Restylane (Galderma) offers firmer, more granular NASHA gels for structure and softer OBT gels for flexible areas. Neither is better; the match to the area matters.

In practice, injectors choose by tissue behavior. Juvederm's Vycross gels are hydrophilic, which gives generous, smooth volume but can look puffy in thin-skinned areas like the under-eye if overfilled. Restylane's NASHA line (Lyft, Defyne to a degree) is firmer and holds its shape, which suits cheekbone projection and chin definition; the OBT/XpresHAn line (Kysse, Refyne, Defyne) moves more naturally in the lips and around the mouth. Duration is broadly comparable: 6 to 12 months in lips, 12 to 24 months for structural products like Voluma or Lyft. Both carry the same risks, including bruising, lumps, and rare vascular occlusion. Both dissolve with hyaluronidase. Your injector's skill and product selection will affect your result far more than the brand on the box.

How dramatic are Juvederm results?

Juvederm results are visible immediately but usually restorative rather than dramatic: softened folds, restored cheek or lip volume, a defined chin or jawline. One syringe is about a fifth of a teaspoon, so a single syringe produces a subtle change in most areas.

The size of the change tracks the volume used and the area treated. Lips change noticeably with 1 mL because the space is small; cheeks and jawlines need more product to shift contour, which is why quotes for those areas are higher. Filler adds volume; it does not tighten loose skin, improve texture, or lift significantly, and chasing a lift with more and more filler is how faces end up looking heavy and distorted. Results last roughly 6 to 12 months in the lips and up to 18 to 24 months for structural products like Voluma. Photos in clinic galleries are typically the good ones; ask to see cases with your face shape and starting point, and ask what total volume was used.
